Hello,
I am a Periodontist, practicing in city of Taj Mahal, Agra, India. I will answer your query point by point.
Your have genuine concerns regarding fee for full mouth dental implants as they are a costly affair.
1. Full mouth implant rehabilitation commonly known as (FMR) is the best treatment modality for replacement multiple missing teeth. Cost of FMR depends on following factors
a) number of implants placed for FMR. here it is important to keep in mind that more the number of implants, more is the long term survival of the prosthesis (artificial teeth). Many dentists around the world place lesser number of implants to keep their fee competitive. minimum number of implants for long term survival in lower jaw is 4 and in upper jaw is 6. however it depends on case to case basis. any good dentist would always place more implants so that the patient does not have any problem later.
b) qualification of the operating dentist- dental implants surgery is best placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons and periodontists as they are specialist in field that deals with surgeries of bone and bone and gums respectively. they are familiar with advanced bone grafting techniques which may be required during implant surgeries. general dentists example DDS / BDS qualification also place implants but generally they had undergone training for implant placement after their tenure of graduation and are not suited to treat complicated cases. Prosthodontist is best suited to place teeth over the implants as they specialise in placing artificial teeth. Many a times due to lack of availability of different specialists and to reduce expenditure both surgical and restorative procedures are done by the same dentist.
c) incumbent expenditure depending upon geographical area. eg fee for single implant with crown in US is 4500 $, In dubai it is 3000 $ in india it is 1000 $. reduction is fee does not mean reduced acumen of the dentist. Incumbent cost (property tax, electricity, staff emoluments etc) on the dentist is 50-70% less in places India.
d) Type of implants and crown opted by the patient. good quality implants include zimmer, nobel biocare, biohorizon, osstem etc. cheaper implants include adin, alpha biocare etc.
Crowns could be Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) cheaper or even cheaper all metal crowns
or metal free (Zirconia, All ceramic etc) premium expensive crowns
Gold crowns (not very common except in Japan and south Korea)
2. it’s good to get reviews of patients. But trust me no 2 patients have had the “same problem”. Reviews should be taken for quality of service and not for treatment per say. It just leads you to a wrong path and adds to confusion. Its best to ask all questions from your dentist so that you get the right answer which would be specific for your problem.
3. Few things you should be clear about before opting for a FMR dentist:
Is he/she Professionally qualified and does the center have different specialist to take care of every aspect?
what implant systems are offered and what is the fee difference between them, what is best suited in your case as per the dentist?
Is your medical history (if any) of any relevance during the dental treatment? Discuss in detail?
What are the possible post operative problem faced after FMR? How it would effect your daily routine? for how long?
How many visits are required?
A good Dentist would be pleased to explain to you everything in detail. Trust is very important both for the dentist as well as the patient for any treatment to succeed.
4. success rate of implants is far more than any other surgical procedure in dental sciences. Implants have a success rate of 96% if case selection and treatment plan is made properly. that is why it is important to understand why your dentist is recommending something which was not recommended to your friend or relative.
5.Removal teeth (prosthesis, partial or complete) gives masticatory efficiency of only 20-25 %. they are not as esthetic as non removable teeth. FMR restores chewing efficiency to 85-90%. chewing is very important function as reduced chewing efficiency leads to many metabolic diseases in long term such as diabetes, gastric problems etc.
getting a partial treatment would only give you partial benefit. its individual choice but it’s always better for full replacement so that all replaced teeth as harmonious with each other.
