What areas do you serve?

Steven P. Ellinwood DDS, PC has been providing family dental care in Fort Wayne for three decades. We serve patients in the greater Fort Wayne area, including the communities of Leo, New Haven, Grabill, and Woodburn. With our early morning appointment times, it’s easy to pop in for a checkup before you head to work or school for the day.

Please introduce yourself.

Growing up, Dr. Steve’s father was a Methodist minister and his family moved around quite a bit. By the time he was in high school, Fort Wayne was the place they called home. It’s where he attended high school and put down real “roots” for the first time. After completing dental school, Dr. Steve returned to the area to establish his own practice.

Dr. Steve co-founded Sonrises Siempre, a non-profit agency that provides dental care to residents of developing nations. He also serves as the President of the School Board for the Medina Village School in Sierra Leone.

Now, his son is in dental school as well. He just has a few more years left at Indiana University to complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He may even come join our practice one day!

We love our patients and they love us right back! Check out our reviews on Facebook, Healthgrades, Yelp, and Google+.

What procedures do you typically recommend and perform?

The type of dental implant restoration that is best for your smile will depend on the number of teeth you have missing. Generally, a single tooth is replaced with a single implant and then a fixed crown on top of it. This eliminates the need to have a conventional bridge in the area (thus causing the adjacent teeth to be ground down or reshaped.)

Multiple tooth loss can be managed in a couple of different ways. Either a bridge or denture can be anchored on top of the dental implants. Due to their strength, as few as four or six implants can support an entire, full arch denture.

What type of implants does your clinic use?

Dental implants offer a permanent solution to replacing missing teeth. Made of biocompatible materials, these artificial tooth roots have the potential to last for the rest of your life. Plus, they’re strong enough to support fixed crowns, bridges, or dentures to replace as many teeth as necessary.

Dr. Steven Ellinwood works closely with local periodontists and oral surgeons who surgically place the implants. Once this phase is completed, Dr. Steve restores the new “tooth” with a fixed prosthesis that looks and feels closer to your natural smile than any denture or partial ever would.

Please give me a summary of the steps in the process of getting an implant at your clinic.

Using implants to anchor your dentures can eliminate worn spots, rocking and shifting of your denture, and accommodate confident speaking. Using bar retainers or individual locators, your prosthesis snaps in place over the implant abutments, locking it in place throughout the day. In the evening, you can remove your “plate” for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Even your existing denture can be retrofitted to snap over new dental implants, when adhesives or pastes can’t deliver the stability that you need. One of our patients came to Dr. Steve after seeing several other dentists, because her denture was so old that replacement parts were no longer available. We were able to retrofit her prosthesis to fit over implants so that she didn’t need to turn around and pay for a new appliance altogether. She was thrilled with the results!

Your cosmetic procedure may be as simple as teeth whitening to help you get pearly whites in under an hour, or a multi-visit treatment plan that involves full mouth reconstruction if you need something more advanced.

What do advise your patients to do if they have a problem with their implant?

When you’re experiencing dental pain, the last thing that you want to think about is affording urgent dental care. Don’t be tempted to put off needed treatment in hopes that your dental discomfort will resolve on its own. That small oral concern can grow into a more complicated (and more expensive) issue to treat down the road.

We can help you find the payment plan that suits your needs – and get your smile back to looking and feeling its best! Call today and schedule your appointment.
